It\u2019s OK, we\u2019ve all been there. So, to help you get over that \u201cI\u2019m feeling so overwhelmed\u201d state, I\u2019m going to refresh your memory on all the basics: from tailoring your resume to writing a cover letter to the terrifying fear of actually applying for a job.<\/span><\/p>\n

After I\u2019ve covered it all, the job search will quickly transform from something scary to something you can totally handle. Trust me, we\u2019ve got your back.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

  1. Customize Your Resume for Each Job<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you\u2019ve been out of college for a while and your resume still lists your first internships, you\u2019re probably better off creating one from scratch.\u00a0 Once it\u2019s up to speed, you\u2019re going to want to tailor it, quantify your bullet points, and cut it down to one page. And yes, you will have to go through this process for each new position you find.\u00a0 Mostly because the hiring manager\u2019s only giving you six seconds unless you give him or her a reason to stick around longer.<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Customize Your Cover Letter<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Update Your LinkedIn Profile and Then Actually Use It<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        LinkedIn is your new favorite form of social media when it comes to finding a job. You probably have a profile, but now you want to craft a great summary that sums up who you are, your professional experiences, and your future ambitions. You also want to personalize your\u00a0 headline, connect with people you know and don’t know but admire, and even attach some of your own work.\u00a0 such as portfolios, published articles, ads, or press releases.<\/span><\/p>\n

        1. Get Your Online Presence in Order<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          As soon as a hiring manager looks at your resume, he or she immediately Googles you (OK, maybe not immediately, but if he or she\u2019s interested, it will happen at some point). Which means that everything on your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even Pinterest is instantly a part of your application.<\/span><\/p>\n

          So how do you manage your social media for career success?\u00a0 Make sure that all public platforms are professional. That doesn\u2019t mean you only share the latest from Forbes. But it does mean there\u2019s nothing (nothing!) that could be interpreted badly. When in doubt, change your settings and make them private.<\/span><\/p>\n

          1. Network<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The rumors are true: The more people you know, the easier it will be to get a job. So you\u2019re going to have to get out and do some networking. Networking comes in all forms, so no matter if you\u2019re introverted or extroverted, there\u2019s always a way for you to connect with the right people. Emphasis on the right way.<\/span><\/p>\n

            You\u2019ll want to start by reaching out to your own network and letting them know you\u2019re looking for a new job. Then, the more uncomfortable part, asking strangers for help. It\u2019s easier than you would imagine!<\/span><\/p>\n

            1. Be Deliberate When Applying to Jobs<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              One common misconception about the search is that you should apply to as many jobs as possible, but this is definitely not the case. Instead, you want to spend time doing your research, filling out your applications, and only applying for positions you\u2019re actually qualified for and interested in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              1. Prepare for the Interview<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                If you land an interview, congrats! Now, before you walk into that meeting, you should practice how you\u2019ll answer some common questions.\u00a0 You also want to have in your repertoire a collection of stories you can tell about your past experiences and how you overcame obstacles. And when the interviewer goes to ask you if you have any questions, you\u2019ll want to come prepared with several good ones.\u00a0 Basically, this is your chance to show the hiring manager who you are and why you\u2019d be a great fit for the company.<\/span><\/p>\n

                When that\u2019s over, you\u2019re down to the final steps. Such as sending a thank you mail. Those few lines could make\u00a0 all the difference. And if you still haven\u2019t heard back after two or three weeks, try following up with the hiring manager to show you\u2019re still interested in the position.<\/span><\/p>\n

                1. Remember That This Process Takes Time<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  You\u2019ll probably start your search super-excited to get started. Then it\u2019ll drag on and on and you\u2019ll find an excuse\u00a0 to quit. Don\u2019t!<\/span><\/p>\n

                  This is a long process especially if you know exactly what you want (which is good!).
